Welcome to another instalment in my project about the contradictions of life under capitalism. Here’s a roundup up things on my mind.
Some things I wanted:
A new pair of Danskos (I’ve worn Danskos since college and have gotten a new pair every 5 years or so, most recently a simple black pair. They’ve been showing up on people in lookbooks and on IG, and my colourist mentioned them as a trend and I trust her observations, so naturally I feel like I want another pair)
Stüssy & Birkenstock Bostons (they moved quickly via Dover Street Market so I didn’t get a pair, but that’s fine, I wasn’t that into the corduroy fabric, I just felt the hype around this item)
To be able to pull off outfits like Laura Dern in Jurassic Park (related to the return of the 90s Armani silhouette, I think?)
Things I bought:
The Ideal Planner by Emma Chamberlain (I need a hard copy planner in my life again and this one has mood board prompts)
Ashley Williams Metal Inside joggers (I’ve wanted something by Ashley for a while and have been waiting for the right piece, price, time, etc. I was so happy when I found these, and I got the last pair, so bonus dopamine rush via scarcity or whatever)
Not much else (I’m trying to save money and make fewer impulse purchases, see below)
Something I’m working on:
I have a limited budget and am actively working on budgeting, planning, etc. I’m trying to recognize when I want something, and wait until I sleep on it before I make a purchase (this is hard with limited drops and auctions, two situations that spike my urges and impulse buys). Advice welcome!
Something that resounded with me:
Every word on Phoebe Bridgers’ Stranger in the Alps
Some things I’m reading:
A Higher Level Classification of All Living Organisms, a paper I came across at work and got unexpectedly drawn into; it’s the latest iteration of the taxonomic hierarchy (kingdom, phylum, class, etc) which has been updated since I last thought about it in science class
My high school diary 😬 (because I’m a masochist?)
We are the Luckiest (a memoir about dealing with whatever your “thing” is)
Things I’m thinking about as I pull together a fall wardrobe:
A comfortable WFH outfit rotation (sweatpants forever)
Working from the office a few days a week, so I like to build outfits I’m confident wearing while walking around a city and going into professional settings
Wrangling kids before and after daycare, which means I need: pockets for keys/phone; the ability to move in all kinds of contorted positions while juggling toddlers and 3 to 5 bags at the same time; durability because I’m hard on my stuff; fabrics/colours I don’t mind spilling things on
Going to the grocery store (actually a fun event these days, kind of, and when I tend to get off my more interesting fits)
Tell me what you see
I’m interested in what you’re interested in. Is there something happening in the world that you’re curious about? Do you have links for me, or suggestions of what you’d like to see in this newsletter? Can I interview you about what you wear for various parts of your life? Comment below, reply to this email (if you got the newsletter in your inbox), or email me at boredmomlikes@gmail.com.
